Long courtship of Plenty Of Fish by Match finally pays off….

I had no idea that singledom was as profitable as it clearly has turned out to be for the founders of Plenty Of Fish! Yesterday saw the announcement that Match Group, the US online dating company, is to acquire Canada’s Plentyoffish Media, the company behind the Internet dating service Plentyoffish.com, for $575m in an all-cash deal.

Call me old fashioned, but I have never quite been able to reconcile in my mind the rise in popularity of online dating services and, more recently, dating (which I use in the loosest sense of the word) apps like Tinder. I have a close friend who is an avid user of online dating services, and in all the years I have known this friend to use them, I have yet to see long-lasting and true love come their way. That said, the meteoric rise in the number of users who subscribe to such services proves that for many people, meeting that special person does appear to start via a computer screen or smart phone.

Match Group’s CEO is quoted as saying that "For over a decade I have followed the consistent growth of Plenty Of Fish, first within North America, then globally, and most recently across platforms, as one of the most popular mobile dating products in the world," so clearly, he believes that the future of online romantic encounters is rosy, as this is his fourth “hook-up” with an online dating company!
