Who might buy all the pies?

One week after the completion of its acquisition of Premier Foods' canning operations, Princes, the UK food and drinks supplier, has reportedly prepared an information memorandum for distribution for the sale of the Fray Bentos canned foods business.

Fray Bentos has changed hands before, having been acquired by the US food conglomerate Campbell’s back in the early 90s and then being sold to Premier Foods back in 2006 as part of the combined sale of all Campbell’s UK and Irish assets for just under $870m.

Princes already has a range of canned pies and meat brands and the sale of Fray Bentos is as a result of the Office of Fair Trading deciding that the combination of Princes’ existing canned pies and meat brands with Fray Bentos would raise competition concerns.

Not being a connoisseur of canned pies, I can’t say whether this deal is of concern to pie eaters around the world, although I do read that Fray Bentos pies have something of a cult following and sport at least one celebrity chef as a fan. Obviously the Office of Fair Trading has a different taste on this.
