Virgin Active flexes its muscles again

Back in 2006, Virgin Active, the UK gym chain, 76% owned by the bearded one himself, Sir Richard Branson, acquired Holmes Place, the upmarket fitness chain.

Despite speculation in recent times that Virgin Active itself may be listed or sold, neither of which happened, the company is now being linked to a potential deal with Esporta, another UK upmarket fitness chain.

If the deal proceeds, and press speculation is that the two companies are in advanced talks, with a potential announcement in the next couple of weeks, then it would nearly double the number of clubs that Virgin Active operates. Given that after the acquisition of Holmes Place, the clubs with the Holmes Place marque were re-branded to Virgin Active, one would have to assume that Esporta Clubs, should the deal proceed, would also be incorporated into the famous "Virgin" brand.

Only time will tell whether this potential acquisition adds further strength to Virgin Active and assists in its potential expansion outside of the UK.
